King City & South Monterey County

Mission Soledad & the Southern Salinas Valley · Monterey County

The southern reaches of Monterey County — anchored by King City and Soledad — are deeply agricultural, with roots reaching back to the mission era. Mission Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, one of the poorest and most isolated California missions, gives the area a somber but significant history.

Timeline

1791

Mission Soledad Founded

Mission Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is founded in 1791 in the remote southern Salinas Valley. 'Soledad' means solitude, and the name proves prophetic — the mission struggles with harsh weather, disease, and isolation. Father Florencio Ibáñez dies here alone in 1818. The adobe ruins were partially restored in the 1950s.

1886

King City Founded

King City is established along the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1886, named for C.H. King, who donated the town site. The town becomes a supply center for surrounding ranches and farms. Nearby Greenfield and Soledad grow alongside it as agricultural service towns in the heart of the Salinas Valley.

Present

Heart of the Salad Bowl

South Monterey County remains the working heart of American agriculture. The fields between Soledad and King City produce lettuce, broccoli, wine grapes, and strawberries worth billions annually. The region's wines — particularly those from the Arroyo Seco and San Lucas appellations — are increasingly recognized for quality.
