Marina and Seaside grew up as support communities for Fort Ord, the massive Army training base that operated from 1917 to 1994. At its peak, the base was the economic engine of the entire peninsula. When it closed, these communities faced devastating job losses — and then reinvented themselves around education, housing, and a new vision for the former military lands.

Born from the Base
Marina and Seaside develop as communities serving Fort Ord's soldiers and families. Seaside, incorporated in 1954, becomes one of the most racially diverse cities in California due to the Army's integration policies. Marina remains unincorporated until 1975. Both towns' economies revolve almost entirely around the military.
Fort Ord Closes — Crisis & Opportunity
Fort Ord's closure under the BRAC process eliminates thousands of jobs. The communities face economic crisis but also inherit vast tracts of coastal land. California State University Monterey Bay opens on the former base in 1994, becoming the anchor of the region's reinvention.
Transformation & Growth
Marina and Seaside transform from military towns into growing communities with new housing, restaurants, and cultural life. The Fort Ord National Monument preserves 14,600 acres of former training lands for hiking and mountain biking. Marina's dune-backed beaches remain some of the least crowded on Monterey Bay.
