Pacific Grove — Butterfly Town USA

From Methodist Retreat to America's Last Hometown (1875–present) · Monterey County

Pacific Grove began as a Methodist summer camp in 1875 and grew into one of the most distinctive small towns on the California coast. Its Victorian cottages, Monarch butterfly sanctuary, and rugged shoreline gave it the nickname 'America's Last Hometown.' The city was dry — prohibiting alcohol — until 1969.

Timeline

1855

Point Pinos Lighthouse

Point Pinos Lighthouse, first lit in 1855, is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast. Built with granite from a local quarry, it has guided ships past the rocky point for over 160 years. Emily Fish, the lighthouse keeper from 1893 to 1914, was one of California's most famous female lighthouse keepers.

1875

Methodist Retreat Founded

The Pacific Grove Retreat Association establishes a Methodist summer camp on the tip of the Monterey Peninsula. Tents and small wooden cottages cluster near Lovers Point, and strict moral codes govern the community — no alcohol, no dancing, no gambling. Many of the tiny Victorian-era cottages survive today, giving Pacific Grove its distinctive character.

1930s

Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary

Pacific Grove becomes known worldwide for the thousands of Monarch butterflies that overwinter in its eucalyptus and pine groves from October through February. The city officially designates itself 'Butterfly Town USA' and passes an ordinance making it illegal to molest a butterfly — with a fine of $1,000.

1969

End of Prohibition — Nearly a Century Dry

Pacific Grove votes to allow the sale of alcohol in 1969, ending nearly a century of prohibition that predated national Prohibition by decades. The vote narrowly passes and transforms the city's restaurant and hospitality scene, while preserving the quiet residential character that makes PG beloved.
