Mission Town Takes Shape
The town of San Juan Bautista grows around Mission San Juan Bautista, the fifteenth California mission. The plaza — laid out in the Spanish colonial tradition — is surrounded by the mission church, a hotel, a stable, and rows of adobe buildings. By the 1830s, it is one of the most important settlements on El Camino Real between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Stagecoach Hub & Gold Rush Town
San Juan Bautista becomes a major stagecoach stop on the route between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Plaza Hotel, still standing, serves travelers on the dusty road south. During the Gold Rush, the town booms as miners and settlers pass through. The population swells with Irish, Mexican, and Chinese immigrants.
State Historic Park & Preservation
San Juan Bautista State Historic Park, established in 1933, preserves the original plaza and surrounding buildings as a living museum. The mission continues to serve as an active parish church. The town hosts regular Living History Days where docents in period costume demonstrate blacksmithing, candle-making, and other 19th-century crafts. Hitchcock fans still visit to see the mission from 'Vertigo.'
